What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.

Jeffco has adopted the five core competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision-Making (CASEL, 2020)

SEL happens in safe and supportive school, family and community environments that support development and provide opportunities and recognition for successfully applying skills.

September SEL Focus at Dutch Creek: Self-Awareness

SELF-AWARENESS: The ability of children to accurately recognize their own emotions, thoughts, and values and understand how these inner experiences influence their behavior and actions across different situations. This includes recognizing strengths and limitations with a well-grounded sense of confidence and purpose.

During the month of September, students in all grade levels will be engaging in activities grounded in self-awareness. Activities include role playing, reading stories, playing, analyzing scenarios, and more. Students will self-assess, set goals, and reflect on their growth throughout the month of September.  This learning will be explicitly taught during CREW time and will be embedded throughout the day in all subjects.
