Writing Curriculum

The Dutch Creek writing instruction is based on the Writer's Workshop framework. This framework comes from the Jeffco document, The Comprehensive Approach to Literacy Instruction (CALI). According to the CALI, "Writing workshop is an organizational structure that allows students to operate at different stages of the writing process at any given time. The teacher's job is to assess, confer, and provide explicit instruction to support and extend the reach of his or her student writers."

The components of the Writer's Workshop:

  • A whole class mini lesson most days that lasts 10-15 minutes and focuses on a skill that connects to the unit of study
  • Shared or interactive writing in which the students collectively write
  • Small guided writing groups in which students can practice their writing skills in a small group with the support of the teacher
  • Independent writing in which students are able to practice the skills taught in the mini-lessons and small guided groups
